Hyperpigmentation is a common, usually harmless condition in which patches of skin become darker in color than the normal surrounding skin.
This darkening occurs when an excess of melanin, the brown pigment that produces normal skin color, forms deposits in the skin. Hyperpigmentation can affect the skin color of people of any race.
Hyperpigmentation is caused when melanin (what gives our hair and skin color) is overproduced in certain spots on the skin, causing them to look darker than your natural skin tone. There are a couple of common causes—age spots on skin that is often exposed to the sun; melasma, often as a result from birth control hormones or pregnancy; and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which happens after a pimple, bug bite, or other trauma to the skin once it heals and leaves a mark behind.
Treating hyperpigmentation naturally.
There are several treatments available, like over-the-counter creams, chemical peels, laser treatment, etc. for fast recovery. If your condition is serious, we suggest that you consult a dermatologist. It is also a good idea to visit a dermatologist before selecting any of the over-the-counter skin pigmentation remedies. However, for those who don’t want to go for expensive, or chemical loaded products, the natural remedy that we offer is quite effective and the ingredients available in the kitchen.
- 1 tsp. turmeric powder (turmeric)
- 1 tsp. lemon juice
Mix well the lemon juice and the turmeric powder and spread over the affected skin areas. Leave it on for about 15 minutes. Rinse with cold water. Do not expose your skin to direct sunlight after this treatment. Repeat it once or twice a day and you’ll notice the dark patches disappearing easily.
Caution: Those who have a sensitive skin can add water to weaken the lemon juice, or replace it entirely with milk.
